Authors...

It's official. After this pod I now have another author to add to my list of favorites! Kate Chopin has amazed me with the stories in our class book. I am very drawn into her stories and they actually stir emotions in me. In reading Desiree’s baby I was furious! What kind of a man would do such a thing to both the woman he supposedly loves and his own son!? After this I am anxious to find and read more of her stories. Last pod I was shocked and amazed to realize that I am a big fan of Mark Twain! I haven’t read any of his works since high school, at which time I was annoyed to be forced to do it, and frankly bored to death! I am glad that I have the opportunity in this class to be exposed to authors that I either didn’t use to appreciate, or never knew existed. Wonder what next week will bring…

  1. I confess as well that most of the authors represented in the textbook I had never heard of and was unaware of their significance to American literature. I can honestly say that this has been the most rewarding class that I have participated in while a student at Ivy Tech. It sure beats the heck out of my other class this semester,Finite Math.Hold on to that spirit!

  2. You have to realize that in the time that "Desiree's Baby" was written, a white man with a black woman, or vice versa, was extremely taboo. I'm not justifying his actions, but it would bring him a horrible shame if he remained married to Desiree. I love that he learns that he is black in the end. It's a wonderful bit of irony.

  3. I was very devastated when I read the story Desiree's Baby. As a mother, I can not imagine anyone not accepting my child. I was very happy at the end to learn that he was the reason why the child was black. Karma came back to haunt him. And he deserved every bit of it.
