The Man?

The story Going to Meet the Man was by far my most detested read of the semester, I only even finished out of the hope that it might end better than it started. With that said, it was a story that really did make me think. It was a harsh and ugly look at America’s history. While I disliked the story, I could respect the author for this work. It stirred emotions in me. I was angry, I was disgusted, and I was sad all at the same time. And isn’t that the point of reading? It painted an all to vivid picture that most people are quick to forget. So while I didn’t enjoy this story, maybe we all need a reminder every once and a while about how far we’ve come, and why we fight for what is right.

  1. Going to meet the man was indeed a very dark and twisted read for me as well. I shared many of the same feelings and emotions that you did and in the end I am sure anyone or mostly anyone that reads this story will come to the conclusion that early times were indeed sad, and very inhumane. I am glad that we have come so far but there is still room for more achievement in the ways humans treat and respect other humans. this story was by far the most vivid and horrific one in this class. I think it should stay part of the curriculum because of the experience and the insights it gives to what kind of actions happened back then so more people can learn from our mistakes. Stories like this will always be a huge controversy because of the very nature of the story and the actions that took place, if we choose to omit these stories how will anyone believe what actions took place, but in keeping these stories it brings up such bad memories of human actions that it makes a person feel so hollow inside after reading the book. The reader should have a choice, all books tell a story, some stories are just down right to real to believe and or think actions like those in this story could ever really happen.

  2. It was a dark and twisted story.I did not like it.I agree we have come far, but not far enough. In my opinion we have a long way to go.You made a good point when you stated the story should stay in the curriculum. To be honest, as I stated before. I was shocked that this story was written by a black man.
