What the heck?!
This one is more of a not my favorite things. Did anyone else read “A Rose for Emily” and totally not get it? Normally I can read these stories and even if I’m confused, by the end everything just sort of clicks and it all makes perfect sense. But not this one! Mostly I am posting this blog entry because I really want to get feedback and hear other people’s perspectives so that I might get it. Maybe I was tired, or just distracted by my crazy kids when I read it. Maybe once I hear someone else’s opinion I’ll read it again and it’ll make a little sense?!

I was confused as well, so don't worry. Frankly, I think the confusion came from lack of interest in the story itself. It just seemed to be someone from the town addressing rumors that had been heard about this old woman and her old house. I did not find very appealing at all.
ReplyDeleteI am actually amazed you didn't love this story! It is my favorite one so far. It is funny to read other people's blogs and realize I am completely alone. It didn't take me long to figure out how the story was going to end, and I loved it! Was it the story line you didn't like, or the way it was written?
ReplyDeleteI thought it was refreshing to read something a little more sinister. I guess it depends on the genre of writing you prefer.
I enjoyed the story A Rose for Emily as well. I think I understood the concept of the story and the meaning behind the tittle but then if i told you what i though the tittle meant and what I thought of the story it may not be exact. The rose I think is that the older lady finally passed away while laying next to the man she may have loved. The lady always held on dear to those that came into her life in an emotional way. Did she poising the man? that is up to the reader. Did she stay with the dead man's body? Evidence does suggest that. I think this story was a bit sinister as Elizabeth stated but it also shows that lonely people can do some fairly evil things to not be so lonely..Was a great read for me.
ReplyDeleteI also liked this story but it did take a couple run throughs to understand. I think she died laying next to a corpse of a man she had been in love with, but I could be mistaken. It was gruesome and I seem to like the gruesome stuff. I'm sorry some of you didn't like it but I do agree it was complicated to understand.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading "A Rose for Emily." It definitly different from the rest of the stories I have selected to read. It reminded me a lot of Great Expectations. I felt sorry for Emily. As said previously it goes to show what crazy things people will do to keep there love. Sadly these types of things really happen all the time, but these days they would be put in a mental institute.
