Waterfowl

I love the occasions when I can either apply the stories I read to real life, or am reminded of a story I read in my daily life. As I was driving out to visit my parents this afternoon, I happened to look up into the sky. What did I see, but a waterfowl. A blue heron to be more exact, but the type doesn’t matter very much. I was instantly reminded of the Bryant poem I read last week. The peacefulness, calm, and promise that “Soon shalt thou find a summer home, and rest.” For some reason this gave me a little bit of inner peace, like all was right in the world, if only for a minute…

  1. I love those moments too! Thanks for sharing. I walked into the Community Room recently for the Cultural Diversity celebration with the focus on the Hispanic culture. The theme of the display was Day of the Dead. I had just re-read Thanatopsis, which means 'view of death'---and shuddered. I must admit I liked Bryant's interpretation much better!

  2. What I love about these writers, is they make simple things in the world seem so amazing. Today, most people wouldn't even notice a waterfowl. Well, unless it were able to connect to the internet or dance. I wonder if you would have even noticed it if you hadn't read Waterfowl? I'm sure I wouldn't have. It is nice to be reminded of simpler things in a world driven by material possessions.
